A new study by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Transportation Studies found that the number of passenger rail trains on the United States has fallen by 30 percent since 1990.
A report from the Federal Railroad Administration said the number has been declining even faster, down to 2,955 trains per day, or just over 2 percent of the country’s total rail fleet.
The report, published Wednesday by the institute, found that while Amtrak has saved the economy by increasing capacity and eliminating delays, the country could save $1.3 trillion over the next 20 years if more rail lines were built.
Here’s how to save Amtrak and keep the rails rolling.1.
Fix Amtrak’s aging systemThe train’s old system is not good enough, according to the institute’s study.
The agency has already begun to replace aging trains with newer ones, and the agency’s own data shows that the cost of replacing the older trains is about $7 billion, or 1.4 percent of Amtrak’s annual operating budget.
Amtrak has to pay about $1 billion for each train, and that’s not enough money to maintain the fleet for 20 years.
That means Amtrak could have to replace about half the countrys fleet.
Amtrak needs to build a new system that will allow for more frequent service, but it also needs to improve the reliability of the existing system.2.
Save Amtrak from itselfThe Federal Railroad Act is supposed to provide for Amtrak to keep operating, and it has done that for decades.
But Congress has never allowed it to happen, which has led to an outdated system that makes the train unreliable.
The Federal Railroad Commission, which regulates Amtrak, says the agency has been trying to make its trains reliable since the 1950s.
The commission, which is led by former Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., said it has been working on an overhaul of Amtrak since it took over in 2013.
In a statement to Axios, Markey said Congress has given Amtrak a year to implement the plan, and he called the plan “a good start.”
He said the commission will continue to work to make the system more reliable, and to make improvements to the current system.3.
Invest in the right kind of trainsThe train network has grown exponentially in recent decades, and many of the trains used by Amtrak now have an engine that is more efficient than the ones in use when the agency was operating the train.
That is a good thing, but Amtrak should also invest in more trains.
“Our trains need to be more capable and more reliable to make up for the loss of capacity,” the commission said.
Amtrak currently has fewer than 30 million miles of track and about 1,000 trains in operation.4.
